Everyone wants a huge database of contacts, leads and potential customers. Face it, the list can never be big enough and business owners everywhere are wondering how to improve their lists and keep the growth. While it is important to focus on building the list and the techniques to do so it is also important to focus on the rights of the visitors. Manners are the backbone of society and without following the rules it is very easy to be placed on a black list, even have customers boycotting your service or site. Believe it or not there are manners and rules that should be followed even for list building tactics. Keeping the following rules in mind when gathering data will help build the list and keep them on the list as well.
Keep the information page easy to fill out and maneuver. If it is confusing, asks a ton of personal questions or is poorly organized, visitors will refuse. The more simplistic the entry page the more likely people will be to enter their information, progressing into the desired information. Also keep distractions on this page to a minimum, too many pictures, text or other goodies will cause the visitor to leave the page, while looking at something else.
Building confidence in the ability to sign up for the list is also a respectful way to treat visitors. By confidence, we mean the fact that the visitor feels confident that if they decide to leave the site or stop correspondence, that the company will agree. Some media lists are very difficult to leave because the company refuses to acknowledge or abide by the opt out rules. This creates animosity and word will quickly spread if manners are not used in online business.
